MPE2013 features a wealth of public lectures to highlight the year of Mathematics of Planet Earth. There is also a public lecture (the I.E. Block Community Lecture) associated with the SIAM Annual Meeting, and the topic of lecture this year follows an MPE theme. The lecture will be delivered by Anette Hosoi of MIT, with the title From Razor Clams to Robots: The Mathematics Behind Biological Inspired Design. This talk promises to look at natural biological systems for insights into the design and control of unconventional robotic systems. The examples used will be crawling snails, digging clams, and swimming micro-organisms. Mathematics enables the analysis of the physical principles exploited by clams and snails and may provide insights into design of robotic systems. This lecture is intended for a general audience.
When: Wednesday, July 10, 6:15 p.m.
Where: San Diego California; Town and Country Resort and Convention Center; Town & Country Room.
The general public is invited to attend.
