Workshop Announcement
There are a variety of natural and man-made disasters involving material transport that impact society. The spread of an oil spill or radioactive material in the ocean or atmosphere are examples. In order to improve emergency response, we must be able to make better predictions about where this material will be transported. However, making accurate predictions in complex fluid flows is extremely difficult. Although some advances have recently been made, much more needs to be done. The purpose of the workshop is to gather together experts in the oceanographic, robotics, and mathematics communities to present the current state of the field, and to determine in which directions research should proceed to best address this challenging problem. The workshop will promote interdisciplinary approaches and will encourage the formation of new collaborative efforts to solve these difficult problems.
