An international conference on “Mathematical Modelling for Tsunami Early Warning Systems” will be held in Málaga, Spain, April 9-11, 2014. The conference is a joint activity of the University of Málaga (UMA), the Mathematics-Industry Spanish Network (MATH-IN) and the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SEMA).
One of the challenges facing our civilization is the early prediction of natural hazards, in order to minimize their sometimes catastrophic impact through effective plans for disaster prevention, evacuation, and aid. Tsunamis feature prominently among these natural disasters because of their destructive power. The development of mathematical and technological tools for the early detection of large tsunami waves and the numerical simulation of their potential effects on coastal regions is currently an area of active research.
The goal of the conference organizers is to bring together scientists from around the world with expertise or interest in Tsunami Early Warning Systems (TEWS), with special emphasis on the northeastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and connected sea regions (NEAMTWS), in order to assess the current state of tsunami forecasting. The scope includes not only mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of the generation, propagation, and coastal amplification processes that form the basis of a TEWS, but also monitoring, detection, operational forecasting, source inversion, educational policies, information exchange, warning issues, tsunami hazard assessment, and social science issues related to preparedness, training, insurance, and the development of structural and societal mitigation strategies and policies.
