Sponsored by: BCAM Chair in PDES, Control and Numerics, Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and the Alliance of Technological Centers IK4

BCAM-Basque Center of Applied Mathematics, in collaboration with the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and the Alliance of Technological Centers IK4, invite you to the public lecture M4TEMOZIOA Matematikaren Hitzordua I Cita con las Matemáticas 2013.  This is the second edition of this cycle that will be held once every year with the objective of disseminate the importance and challenging future of contemporary Mathematics and is part of the official agenda of the 2013 Year for the Mathematics of Planet Earth. This joint venture aims to underline the importance of Mathematics as such but also as a key of technological development and modern sustainable society.

We are very honored to have Christiane ROUSSEAU, an expert in small-scale dynamic systems with emphasis on applications to mathematical biology and the study of predator-prey systems. Recognized for strong communication skills, coordinates the activities of the 2013 International Year dedicated to Mathematics of Planet Earth.

Enrique ZUAZUA, Director of the BCAM Chair in PDES, Control and Numerics, Juan Ignacio PEREZ, Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and Guillermo DORRONSORO, Vice-President of IK4, are very pleased to invite you to this first conference of M4TEMOZIOA 2013

MATHEMATICS OF PLANET EARTH

Earth is a complex planet inside the solar system, with dynamic movements in the mantle, an atmosphere, and oceans. It supports life and is organized by humans.  More recently the future of life is threatened by climate change and overexploitation of resources. Mathematics provides tools to discover the history of the Earth, explore its interior, study its climate, and understand its ecosystems. The lecture will highlight with examples the role of mathematics it.

LUR PLANETAREN MATEMATIKAK

Lurra eguzki sistemaren barnean dagoen planeta konplexua da; mugimendu dinamikoak mantuan, atmosferan eta ozeanoetan dituena. Bizitzaren euskarria eta gizakiek antolatuta. Berriki, bizitzaren etorkizuna mehatxupean dago klima aldaketa eta baliabideen gehiegizko ustiapena dela eta. Matematikak Lurraren historia ezagutzeko tresnak eskeintzen dizkigu: bere barnea arakatzeko, bere klima aztertzeko eta azkenik, bertan dauden ekosistemak aditzeko. Hitzaldian, adibideen bitartez, matematikak gure planetaren ulermenean, ezagueran eta bera babesten laguntzeko erronketan duen eginkizuna nabarmenduko da.
