A workshop “Mathematics of Planet Earth: Challenges and Opportunities” will be held at Arizona State University, January 7-10, 2014. The workshop aims to expose students and junior researchers to the challenges facing our planet, the role of the mathematical sciences in addressing those challenges, and the opportunities to get involved in the effort. Financial support is available to support participants to attend this workshop and to participate in follow-up activities.
About Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013-Plus (MPE2013+): The Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS) is sponsoring a new program, MPE2013+. This program, whcih is an outgrowth of Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013, will consist of a series of workshop clusters scheduled throughout 2014 and 2015 and will focus on research issues concerning several sustainability topics: Management of Natural Resources, Global Change, Natural Disasters, Sustainable Human Environments, and Data-aware Energy Use. Each workshop is planned to encourage research and address fundamental questions in the topic area. Follow-up activities are also planned throughout 2014 and 2015. For more information on MPE2013+, visit the MPE2013+ website.
How to Apply: Information on the workshop can be found here. Applications by students and junior researchers interested in receiving financial support to attend the workshop are now being accepted. Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2013 and will continue until all slots are filled.
