THE LAUNCH OF THE MPE EXHIBITION TO TAKE PLACE AT UNESCO The launch of the MPE exhibition will be organized by the International Mathematical Union jointly with MPE2013. It will take place at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on March 5-8 2013. The winners will receive their prizes during a ceremony on March 5. MPE2013 will work in partnership with UNESCO, IMU and ICMI for the promotion of the MPE exhibition, and for other MPE activities like the distribution of special MPE issues of magazines in Africa. _____________________________ 2. MPE COMPETITION It is not too late to participate to the "Mathematics of Planet Earth Competition for an open source exhibition of virtual modules" (museum-quality exhibits). You can participate yourself. Your help is also welcome to spread the news and encourage other people to participate: students, colleagues, teachers, etc. In particular, partners are strongly invited to post the competition on their website. The modules submitted will form the basis of the permanent Mathematics of Planet Earth Open Source Exhibition. They could be reproduced and utilized by many users around the world from science museums to schools under a creative commons license. Examples of modules or themes to be covered are available on the website. The competition is open until December 20, 2012. The winners will be announced on March 5, 2013 at the headquarters of Unesco in Paris. www.mpe2013.org/competition ______________________________ 3. MPE LAUNCHES AROUND THE WORLD The Canadian launch of MPE2013 will take place during the Winter Meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society on December 8-10 2012 in Montreal: http://cms.math.ca/Events/winter12/ The program will comprise several MPE components: plenary talks by Graciela Chichilnisky and Martin Nowak, special sessions, one event for college (lycées) professors and two public lectures by Ivan Ekeland and Doyne Farmer. The US launch of MPE2013 will take place during the Joint Mathematics Meetings on January 9-12 2013 in San Diego: http://jointmathematicsmeetings.org/jmm The program will comprise several MPE components: a plenary talk by Emily Shuckburgh, special MPE sessions and the Porter Lecture by Ken Golden. The Australian launch of MPE2013 will take place on January 29 2013 with the first MPE2013 Simons Public lecture of Simon Levin in Melbourne. The Australian Chief Scientist, patron of the year, will launch the Australian participation in an opening address. The lecture will be followed by a formal reception: http://mathsofplanetearth.org.au/ _____________________________ 4. SERIES OF MPE PUBLIC LECTURES AROUND THE WORLD The Canadian Mathematical Society and the Canadian Institutes have organized a Cross-Canada Series of Lectures on Mathematics of Planet Earth, with 13 public lectures to take place all around Canada in 2013. The first two lectures of the MPE2013 Simons Public Series will take place in Australia and California. Simon Levin will give the first lecture on January 29 2013 in Melbourne, while Emily Shuckburgh will give the second lecture at San Francisco on March 4 2013. _____________________________ 5. ANNOUNCING AN MPE2013 BLOG AND CALL FOR MPE BLOGGERS The MPE2013 Working Group for Public Awareness and Social Media is in the process of organizing a community of MPE2013 Bloggers. We invite you to join in this public conversation about the mathematical sciences and their relevance to studies of Planet Earth. Everyone is welcome, whether you are an old hand at blogging or a newcomer to social media. We encourage personal commentary on any topic associated with MPE2013. A contribution can be a report on a meeting, a pointer to important research results, a website recommendation, a short essay on a key issue, a book review, a news item, or any other material that might be of interest to a broad audience. A contribution can be as short as a couple of paragraphs and may include a photo or illustration or even an audio or video clip. We recommend no more than about 1,000 words of text. Here is a link to a helpful web site, http://www.maa.org/pubs/FOCUSfeb-mar12_blogroll.html, in case you are wondering how to get started. We anticipate a daily blog during the entire year 2013. You may choose your date(s) and topic(s) to blog about your favorite event(s). We understand that last-minute changes are part of the action. To register, send a message to blog@mpe2013.org, with an indication of preferred dates and topics. __________________________ 6. POSTING EVENTS ON THE WEB AND CONTRIBUTING TO MPE NEWSLETTER Partners are invited to post their events on the MPE website and to build their own MPE2013 webpage. Groups of partners and countries are also invited to communicate to us information on the MPE activities they are planning, and that could be presented in one of the next newsletters. You can follow the example of Australia. __________________________ 7.
